Happy Earth Day!

Although I think we should try to make every day Earth Day!

I believe that if more people realize how fragile some of the threads that hold so many ecosystems in balance are they would be a little slower in causally disregarding our environment.

So today try to get outside for a while. Listen to the birds sing and the waters lap on the shore. Find a quiet spot to reflect on the beauty that we are so fortunate to have surrounding us here on the North Shore.

If everyone can carry a little of that awareness into their everyday lives then maybe we humans still have a chance to preserve a livable biosphere for our children and grandchildren.

EPA Finds Greenhouse Gases Are A Threat To Public Health

Big news on the climate change front courtesy of Joe Romm and his excellent blog Climate Progress.

The EPA has ruled that greenhouse gases pose a threat to public health and welfare. This finding follows a 2007 Supreme Court ruling that ordered the EPA to review the science on greenhouse gases and determine if regulation is necessary under the Clean Air Act. This ruling should prod Congress into passing strict regulations on greenhouse gas emissions, because industry will realize that if Congress doesn't pass legislation then the EPA can regulate them by itself under the Clean Air Act.

Score one for those of us trying to maintain a habitable climate for future generations.

What You Can Do About Mold

There is a lot of information on the Internet about mold, as well as a lot of misinformation. Mold is a symptom of too much moisture so in order to rid your home of it you need to stop the moisture at the source.

Mold around windows is common during winter due to condensation forming and flowing down the window. Clean up the mold with a light bleach solution and consider using a plastic film window insulation kit next winter. These kits are inexpensive and will help keep the surface temperature above the dew point so condensation will not form.

Basement floods can be a real problem, since mold can begin forming within 24 hours of the flood as long as there is moisture present. Anything absorbent such as rugs should be taken out and dried thoroughly, cardboard boxes and paper removed, and the basement needs to be dried completely.

If you have any questions regarding mold, flooding, or related topics I have more information available at my office at Trust Lands, or call me at 475-2415 ext. 35. I can also come out to your house to assess mold and moisture problems. Give me a call!
